FAQs

  • what is mastering?

Mastering is the final step of the audio production process, where your final mix is transformed into a release-ready song.

Through carefully applying EQ, compression and saturation, I transform your mix into a finalised song that’s ready for release.

  • do I need a mastering engineer?

By giving your music to a mastering engineer, you allow experienced ears to carefully hone your finished song to provide a final layer of polish before release.

A professional master really helps to give your music that extra layer of magic that ensures it sounds great, no matter where it’s heard.

  • what’s the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mastering is a different process from mixing. While mixing involves working on your tracks in isolation, mastering ensures that all individual elements of your track blend together to create a cohesive final master.

When I’m mastering music, I rely on separate tools that I wouldn’t generally use on mixing projects. For example, the classic 1176 compressor sounds fantastic on vocals, drums, and bass - but on a final master it’s way too aggressive. Similarly, stereo imaging tools are a great way to add some depth and width to a master, however in a mixing context they can easily introduce nasty issues with phase correlation if not treated with care.

  • how does mastering improve my music?

  • Mastering gives your music a final polish before release, and ensures that your tracks translate well across different playback systems.

As a mastering engineer, it’s my job to make the careful final tweaks to your music before release - adding EQ, compression, and saturation as necessary to help bring your music to life.

  • How Loud should my mix be before mastering?

In order to master your music, mastering engineers need a little headroom in your mix. Generally, I’d suggest that aiming for a true peak of -6db ensures that I have sufficient space to work on dynamic processing.

Some clients have been led to worry about LUFS, which is more of a concern for the mastering stage rather than the mixing stage.

  • will mastering make my music louder?

If you’re struggling to get your mix loud enough, expert mastering can be a great way to add some volume and energy into your mix.

By using a brickwall limiter, mastering engineers can enhance the volume of your track, making it feel punchier and livelier, however this comes at the expense of reducing the dynamic range of your track. Caution is advised!
